AXES

In the backcountry, a good axe is far more than just gear—it’s often the key to staying warm, dry, and fed when you’re miles from the trailhead. Bushcraft and wilderness camping have always relied on that simple, honest partnership between hand, hickory, and steel.

These axes carry on that tradition. Each one starts with a genuine vintage American head—Council Tool, True Temper, and other classics built in an era when tools were expected to outlast their owners. Carefully restored, re-profiled for modern use, and hung on select hickory hafts, they blend proven old-school patterns with practical refinements. Light enough to pack deep into the woods, tough enough to work hard when you get there. Tools with real heritage, ready to become part of your own stories in the wild.

24” Forest Service Axe

This 24-inch bushcraft axe is built for the pack, the canoe, or the long haul on foot: a genuine 2½ lb U.S. Forest Service boy’s axe head—high-carbon steel, made by True Temper—paired with a slim, select American hickory handle that’s just the right length to get some serious work done when you need it.

At 24 inches overall it’s compact enough to lash beside your pack or slide under a kayak deck, but the 2½-pound head still gives you real chopping power for processing firewood, limbing, and clearing. The heritage patterned hickory haft absorbs shock beautifully, and the traditional hang keeps the head married to the handle through years of splitting, chopping, and everyday camp abuse.

It’s the perfect “one-tool option when weight and space matter, but you refuse to baby your gear. Light enough for extended carry, heavy enough to actually get work done. An honest axe for people who live in the woods, not just visit them.

21” Council Camp Axe

A vintage 2¼ lb Council Tools Railsplitter (Jersey pattern) head, carefully re-profiled for lighter weight and better hand placement to bring the total weight down to an easy-carrying 2 lb 10 oz. It is hung on a straight-grained 21″ American hickory handle with an oil finish and modest swell for secure grip.

Despite the weight reduction, the head retains plenty of mass behind the edge, giving it excellent splitting performance on kindling and small-to-medium rounds—noticeably better than most axes of similar overall weight. The 21″ length strikes an ideal balance: compact enough for packing, yet long enough to provide strong leverage when splitting from a kneeling position or working off a low stump. The convex edge is ground thin and sharpened to a keen, ready-to-work finish. A highly practical all-around camp axe that handles real firewood duties without burdening the pack.

Classic Council splitting muscle in a compact, pack-ready package—the axe that actually earns its spot on every trip.

19” True Temper Camp Axe

This axe starts with a 2¼ lb vintage True Temper boy’s axe head, it is lightened and reshaped for better carving ergonomics. It’s hung it on a premium, heritage patterned 19″ hickory handle with a little extra curve and swell (fits your palm like it grew there). the whole tool weighs in at 2 lb 9oz With it’s sheath.

The thinner geometry and refined handle make this axe particularly well-suited for limbing, detailed carving, up close work, and any task requiring extended one-handed control. It remains entirely capable of routine chopping and kindling duties, yet feels balanced and precise in the hand during finer cutting tasks.

An excellent choice for campers and bushcrafters who value a lightweight tool that excels at both wood processing and carving.

20” Cruiser Camp Axe

This double-bit camp axe is built around a genuine vintage 2½ lb cruiser head—those classic American patterns made for all-day woods work back when cruisers marked timber for a living. The head’s been carefully restored and differentially ground: one bit with a stout convex edge and more obtuse angle for splitting kindling, grubbing roots, or any heavy, abusive task; the other side thinned to a sharper, more acute convex for clean hewing, limbing, or even controlled carving when you need precision.

It’s hung straight and secure on a premium 20″ American hickory handle—straight-grained, oiled, with plenty swell to lock in the hand during long sessions. Overall length keeps it compact for packing while still giving plenty of swing when you need power.

Comes with a hand-made leather sheath that’s built smart: the whole thing slips off as one piece for full access, or you can remove just one side and leave the other in place—perfect for keeping things safe when you’re sitting down to carve or doing finer work with the sharp bit exposed. A thoughtful, packable double-bit that truly earns its spot on any serious bushcraft trip.
